BRIEF

The business owner of this early learning and child care centre had a vision to provide a very high quality of service which must spread across all areas including indoor and outdoor facilities, client access, experienced staff and carers, a contemporary and relevant syllabus, dietary provision and more. The brief for the outdoor play and learning spaces was a quite simple really. Activities, more activities and even more activities. Many nature based learning opportunities. Minimal maintenance, no lawn or mud patch/kitchens.

OUTCOME

The outcome of this project is the result of realising when to be the pragmatic ‘adult designer’ and when to regress and embody the enthusiasm, wonder and explorative nature of the wild, and insecure, child within. Our approach effectively entwined the two mind sets, layering design principles of clear passive and active zones, places for socialising and retreating, circuits and movement patterns, engaging textures, all the while building a cohesive story between all of the parts from the perspective of how a child might be drawn, repelled, engaged and released through the spaces.
