BRIEF
The Darley Community Hub renovation project was a council initiative to include early learning and after hours care building and landscape to existing council occupied ammenities. We were engaged in the project as sub consultants and introduced to the project at schematic design phase by the appointed architects, so we hadn’t met the client or even seen a design brief.
OUTCOME
Not having a specific client brief or knowing Darley was even a place, we started from scratch and researched a little about the suburb adjacent to Bacchus Marsh. We found some identifiable character in the surrounding landscape including quarries, rivers, mountains, agricultural land and highways. As it’s always our intent to design unique landscapes which are informed by local character, we grabbed these few strong features intending to translate them into ‘small people’ world. The best thing about this approach, i.e. collecting inspiration from local sources, is that human’s age old questioning of ‘where am I from ?’ and search for ‘feeling at home’ can begin at this early age by simply engaging within the surroundings.
